Kibale National Park in western Uganda offers the best chimpanzee tracking experience in Africa. The park's moist tropical forest shelters over 1,500 chimpanzees — the highest density in East Africa — and 12 additional primate species including red colobus and L'Hoest's monkey. The Kanyanchu primate walk delivers reliable chimpanzee encounters, and habituated chimp communities allow visitors to spend up to one hour with these fascinating primates.

Best Time to Visit
June–August and December–February for drier conditions and better forest tracking. Chimps are present year-round.
Weather & Seasons
Kibale's high-altitude moist forest creates a cool, humid microclimate. The forest receives rainfall throughout the year but has two relatively drier periods. Expect lush green vegetation and some humidity even in dry season.
Long Dry Season
Jun – Aug
Relatively drier with better trail conditions. Excellent chimpanzee tracking success rates.
Short Dry Season
Dec – Feb
Cool and clearer. Good chimp tracking and often great birding along forest trails.
Short Rains
Sep – Nov
Regular rain. Forest is spectacularly lush. Chimps are active but tracking takes longer.
Long Rains
Mar – May
Heavy rainfall. Some trails muddy. Chimp tracking continues but success rates are lower.
