Volcanoes National Park
Rwanda's crown jewel — the Virunga volcanoes protect over 300 mountain gorillas in mist-shrouded bamboo forests in one of Earth's most extraordinary wildlife encounters.
About Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park protects the Rwandan section of the Virunga Volcano Chain — five extinct volcanoes rising to 4,507m above the misty highlands of northwest Rwanda. The park shelters over 300 mountain gorillas in habituated family groups, offering one of the world's most intimate wildlife experiences. Beyond gorillas, the park is home to golden monkeys in bamboo zones, excellent volcano summit hikes, and the Dian Fossey tomb and Karisoke Research Centre.

Weather & Seasons
The Virunga volcanoes create their own climate, with mist and cloud common at altitude. The park sits at 1,850–4,507m, making it cool to cold year-round. Two drier seasons offer better trekking conditions.
Long Dry Season
Jun – Sep
Best trekking conditions with less mud. Gorillas found at more accessible altitudes.
Short Dry Season
Dec – Feb
Drier and clearer. Good gorilla tracking success and often stunning views to Lake Kivu.
Short Rains
Oct – Nov
Rain showers make forest trails slippery. Gorilla trekking continues but requires more effort.
Long Rains
Mar – May
Heavy rains and cold mist. Very muddy trails. Trekking is possible but challenging.
